Frequently Asked Questions
What makes Whistle Stop Welder different?
With the exception of our FR shirts, all of our products are handmade here in the USA. #MERICA.
We do not cut corners on the details. We use high-end materials such as top-quality leather, flame-resistant thread, and stainless steel buckles. Unlike our competitors, our products are fully customizable, so you can add your name, logo, or motto to your arm pads or sleeves.
Why is heat-resistant thread better than nylon thread?
Heat-resistance isn’t flame-proof, but it’s the next best thing. Nomex flame-retardent thread is treated to withstand extreme temperatures. And it retains its heat resistance for years despite exposure to elements such as extreme heat, water, and detergents.
Nylon thread, on the other hand, begins to deteriorate at 285 degrees Fahrenheit and can fail at 500 degrees Fahrenheit. A single spark can burn through a nylon thread instantly.
Nomex fire-retardant thread is the reason our arm pads, sleeves, and knee pads last a lot longer than other brands.
How can I search to find products on the website?
Hand-stamping is leather craftsmanship at its finest. Using metal alloy tools and a small hammer, a skilled artisan carefully taps custom designs into high-quality leather surfaces by hand.
Laser-cutting is more precise and is often used to create large-scale designs in bulk leather products, such as background crosshatching on leather goods. While laser cutting is not inferior, it lacks the character of hand-stamped leather.
What’s the difference between full-grain and top-grain leather?
Full-grain leather is, as the name suggests, all the natural layers of an animal hide. Full-grain leather is the highest quality leather available for its durability and heat resistance.
Top-grain leather is the uppermost layer of the animal hide. Separating the layers makes top-grain leather thinner and, therefore, more flexible and cooler than full-grain leather.
How do I measure my arm to get the right size arm pad?
Measure the circumference of your arm 4 inches up from your wrist to determine the size arm pad you will need.
And remember, if you are a right-handed welder, you need a left arm pad. The opposite is also true. If you are a left-handed welder, you need a right arm pad.
How do I measure for a sleeve?
To measure for a sleeve, you will need to measure from the tip of your shoulder to your wrist. Place your tape measure on the seam of a well-fitting shirt. Measure to the bend of your wrist. Then, select the size that best correlates with your measurements.
- Small (20”-21”)
- Medium (22”-23”)
- Large (24”- 25”)
- X-large (26”- 27”)
How long will it take to receive my product once I place my order?
With the exception of our FR shirts, all of our products are handmade. If your product isn’t customized, it normally ships within 3-5 business days. For customized products, it normally takes 7-10 business days to ship.
